Yungang Grottoes

Yungang Grottoes

The Yungang Grottoes is located at the foot of the Wuzhou Shan mountains 16 km southwest of Datong city, Shanxi province. The construction of the caves was started under the auspices of the noted monk Tan Yao in 453. Some 40,000 people took part in the carving work in the period between 460-525 AD during the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534 AD).

The 51,000 Buddha statues were carved in the 53 grottoes in the hills and extend about 1 km east west. Sculptures here are noted for their vigorous features and rich variety that range from the smallest, only 2 centimeters high, to the tallest – a Buddha 17-meters high.

Over the past 1,500 years, Yungang Grottoes have been damaged by both war and natural disasters. In recent past ten or so years, the Datong municipal government has managed to preserve the Yungang Grottoes. In 2001, the Yungang Grottoes considered by UNESCO a masterpiece of early Chinese Buddhist cave art were made a World Heritage Site.

Hanging Monastery ( Suspended Temple )

The monastery was founded during the Northern Wei period (386-534AD) in honor to Sakymuni, Laozi and Confucius, who are founders of Buddism, Taoism and Confucianism, boasting a history of over 1,400 years. The monastery was renovated and expanded during the Tang (CE 618-907), Jin (CE 1115-1234), Ming (CE 1368-1644) and Qing (CE 1644-1911) Dynasties. The latest restoration of the monastery took place in 1900. In 1982, the monastery was listed as one of our country's key protecting units of cultural relics.

The wooden temple complex was built into the rock face of the cliff about 100 meters above the riverbed when it was built 1400 years ago. It is now about 50 meters above the ground because of sediment deposits. Over 40 halls and pavilions are connected each other by corridors, bridges, boardwalks, and well balanced in height. Inside the monastery are over 80 statues in bronze, iron, clay and some are carved out of stone.
