Peking Opera

Among the hundreds of forms of opera throughout the country, Beijing Opera has a great influence and is therefore regarded as a national treasure.

Beijing opera is one of the famous forms of the art, but its history is short. The year 1790 is the key date: Qianlong the fourth emperor of the Qing Dynasty summoned opera troupes from different localities to perform for his 80th birthday celebration. With the time they gradually formed a new performance style- Beijing opera. Beijing Opera is a comprehensive performing art that combines music, singing, dialogue, pantomime, acrobatics and martial arts. He or she has to be a performing artist, a singer, and a dancer at the same time. The costumes and make-up are magnificent. The colors of make-up are heavy, red symbolizes honesty; blue, courage; white, wickedness; black, straightforwardness and multiple colors for fairies and devils.

The form was popularized in the West by the actor Mei Lanfang ( 1894-1961 ) who is said to have influenced Charlie Chaplin.
